1949 Buick Super Sedanette: Always Moving

A stunning American from the post war era.

Oh damn. Here’s a real treat- its a 1949 Buick Super Sedanette Mild Kustom.

The GM sedanettes of the late 40’s and early 50’s have epic proportions, and in 1949 were offered in two models- this, the Super Sedanette, and the bigger Roadmaster Sedanette. GM had been perfecting the “coupe-meets-sedan” Sedanette body style since before the war, and by 1949 it was just about spot on. The 1949 Buick Super Sedanette, in my mind, would go on to remain one of the most beautiful Buicks ever produced. If not one of the best looking mass produced American cars ever.

An all new design for that year, the ’49 Super Sedanette came off the production line looking like a factory kustom. The roofline was low slung as if it had just received a chop. The less pronounced hood almost seemed to have been pancaked, especially when compared to its 1948 predecessor. And with long Chrome “Sweep Spears”, the big Buick looked like it was doing about 60mph standing still.

Post war America couldn’t get enough of the bold yet refined look, and Buick managed to hold the #3 sales spot behind Ford and Chevrolet.

With a big straight 8 cylinder motor upfront and the optional new Dynaflow transmission (the first mass-produced, commercially available automatic transmission with a torque converter), the Buick was at home effortlessly cruising down America’s great highways.

This example has had several mild kustom mods to enhance an already jaw dropping design. Cadillace Sombrero hubcaps, Coker wide whites and Lake Pipes all help to give the car a period-correct Kustom look. Whilst the overhauled brakes, 12v conversion, new leather interior and Airbags in the rear help to improve the driveability of what is now 70 year old car.

Beautiful paint in metallic burgundy, interior has all been re done in leather, new rubbers, window seals etc.

Sombrero hubcaps, lake pipes, pinstriped boot, bonnet, taillights, and all round inside the car. Classy not over done. I’ve installed a Bolt in air bag kit to the rear, original knee action shockers were rebuilt, brand new Coker l78 tyres, brakes completely overhauled, cylinders, hoses, master cyl, etc, new Carby, 12volt conversion, new alternator.
