1956 Ford F100 Custom Cab: Good Ol’ Boy

A classic pickup that's just right

Today on Car Rave we’re featuring this rather sinister 1956 Ford F100 Custom Cab currently for sale on Instagram.

It’s a hard thing to make an already great looking car (or truck) somehow look better than original, but that’s exactly the case here. The owner (@shaunthechef) has done an amazing job in subtly improving what is an already stunning looking truck, but the time has come to sell.

Second generation F-trucks are fairly iconic, but the 1956 model year was the standout. It was the last iteration of the second generation, and considered a one year only model due to it’s distinct wrap-around front windshield. It’s dramatic looks have made it popular amongst restorers, rodders and custom builders world wide, but few, in my mind, get it really right.

My brother and I have endless discussions about whether a modified car is wrong or right, often picking cars apart like a bitchy pair of teenage girls. The wrong tyre size, tinted windows on anything built before 1990, coilovers on a hot rod. All big no-no’s, in our opinion. Not that I am in ANY place to comment (most of my cars are off the road). But hey, that’s the nature of modifying cars. Everyone has an opinion, whether it’s justified or not.

But I can’t really fault this thing. My “period-correct” brain wants to hate on the airbags and the (somewhat) modern driveline, but I just can’t. Sure, the original Y-Block would be cool, but it would take big bucks to bring it up to 302 standards. And whilst low and static suspension is always tough, these F100’s look great in the weeds, so the bags are a must.

One of the things I just love about this F100, is that it toes the line between show car and daily driver. It has all the trimmings- good chrome, nice interior and standout looks- but also shows signs of a life well lived via a bit of patina and evidence of a few love taps here and there. I’d feel equally comfortable parking at the Boogaloo or taking it to Bunnings.

If I could buy it, I would. In a heartbeat. And I’m not even really a truck guy.
