1961 Holden EK: Long Live the Holden

Farewell to an iconic piece of Australian history

As most of us are now aware, iconic Australian brand, Holden, is no more. A shame, but not unexpected after the last couple of years. Colorado? Pfft. Equinox? Fuck No. ZB Commodore? Please stop. The company had become a husk of its former self. A shame. So in honour of the fallen lion, I want to feature a couple of Holden’s over the coming days, beginning with this stunning 1961 EK Holden that’s currently for sale.

In my mind, the EK is one of the most iconic Holden’s. Whilst the fins where about 4 years late on the scene, the EK (and pre-cursor, the FB) was a graduation from the basic styling of the FC-FE Holden’s. For some reason when I think of 60’s Australia, I always imagine a Barrier Coral EK parked out the front of a triple fronted brick veneer asbestos castle. It’s just SO Australian.

This particular EK caught my eye a while back, boasting a bit of a Mild Kustom look, usually reserved for American tanks from the same era. I’m a big fan. And whilst the owner states she’s no show stopper, the price is good and the modifications would lead to some reliable and cheap classic motoring.

If you’re keen, you can find this cool old 1961 Holden EK on the Steel Bumper Buy and Sell group on Facebook, here (you’ll have to become a member of the page).

1961 Holden EK: In the owner’s own words

Quick Sale Wanted! – Australian Classic

I have owned my 1961 EK Holden since I was 15 years old. Over the last 13 years I have completed a full rebuild taking it from a terrible lime green, rusty Holden to the tidy, head turning classic it is today.

The EK has featured in many shows and had some magazine appearances. It would make a great family cruiser, and has been used as a reliable daily driver just prior to its recent freshen up.

Some Items of work completed (too much to list):

  • Rust repair (all over)
  • New paint
  • New interior
  • Complete re-wire
  • HR Front End, Disc Brakes, CRS Drop Spindles
  • Shortened VN Commodore Diff, Disc Brakes
  • HQ Stud Pattern
  • Adjustable Koni Shocks
  • Rebuilt 202 Holden Red Motor (regularly serviced)
  • Twin Stromberg Carbs / Extractors / Mild Cam
  • Rebuilt Trimatic (Auto) with short shift kit

Like all things almost 60 years old, the Holden isn’t perfect and does need a few minor items addressed. However, this is your opportunity to own a reliable, one of a kind family classic with all major work completed.

Serious enquiries only, I don’t really want to sell it so don’t expect to pick it up for nothing.
