1966 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe 489ci: Mid-year Madness

Going all in on one of America's best

You are looking at, in my opinion, possibly the toughest street car for sale in Australia right. It’s a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe 489ci – and it’s flared out, stroked out and tough as nuts.

I have mentioned my love for the C2, or ‘mid year’ Corvettes before. Personally, I think they are one of the best looking American cars ever built- and this all-black example is no exception. Sure, some of the 60’s charm is gone, but what it lacks in that department, it makes up for in sheer toughness. Sporting a Grand Sport-esque flared out stance, rear wheels that seemingly have endless dish and a colour scheme that resembles Batmans wardrobe, this Corvette is not here to f*** around.

I haven’t even mentioned the motor yet, and trust me when I tell you it’s a doozy.

In 1966, the most power you could get in a Ferrari was about 320hp. An E-Type Jaguar was about 285hp. Pretty piss poor considering that this car, the blue-collar 1966 Corvette, could walk out of the GM Missouri plant with a 427ci, 425hp (317kw) big-block V8. Even in today’s money, most would consider those figures pretty decent. Not to mention they are one of the toughest sounding GM V8’s ever produced.

Well, not the owner of this ’66. They’ve opted to stroke out the already massive big block to a monstrous 489 cubes, which equates to roughly 8 litres of fury. There is no power listed in the ad, but it would be safe to assume horsepower would be around 550hp based on what I’ve read about similar spec’d motors. 550hp in a car that is essentially a fibreglass shell on a ladder chassis (with transverse leaf rear springs too) is more than enough to place you in some pretty precarious situations.

So on that note, if you have a penchant for the obscene and somewhat terrifying, then buy this! You’ll need some deep pockets to ride this train, however, as the owner is asking $150k. That’s still play money considering the price of genuine 427ci cars though, if that’s any consolation.

If your convinced, you can find this 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe 489ci on Carsales here.

I built this car for myself believing that I would never sell it, but my health issues have changed that. My loss will be someone else’s gain. This is a fantastic car and will definitely be a sound investment.

Serious buyer please call my mobile as I don’t access my email as often, and leave a message if you can’t get through. Thank you.

Great movie, great scene, great song, great car.

And who could forget Dennis Hoppers beat up ‘Vette from King of the Mountain. That sound!
