1982 Toyota Hilux SR5: Can’t Kill It

An old school truck in mint condition
1982 Toyota Hilux

Here’s a cool little 1982 Toyota Hilux SR5 that’s currently for sale. Not a bad little truck, especially if you’re hankering for some JDM goodness on a budget.

Much has been said about Toyota’s reliability, in particular the Hilux. We all remember when the original Top Gear crew planted one on a high rise building before promptly demolishing it. Or when they drove a later model to the North Pole.

You probably won’t want to do either of those things in this little yellow truck, however.

But, if you are looking for a neat cruiser or period correct bike hauler for your Honda/Yamaha cafe racer, then this is probably perfect. Mint examples like this rarely come up due to their notorious toughness and often trade/farm related history (i.e- they get the sh*t beaten out of them). Infact, this little SR5 has somehow escaped any hard work at all by the looks of things.

As similar era Toyota’s climb the price guide (hello 60 series), 80’s Hilux’s (and 4 Runners) have seemed to escape some of the celebrity status. With low kilometres, a fresh respray (by well known Wagga painter Woods Kustom Metal Works), I doubt you’ll find a better value piece of Toyota tin.

What would I do if it was mine? I’d jump on Yahoo Auctions Japan, find a nice set of Watanabes, dump it and be done. Instant JDM cool.

Or just leave it as is.

Undecided.
