1984 Toyota GZ10 Soarer: Not Grey

a Shakotan Soarer that will make you stare

Toyota Soarers. For most Aussies, the big luxury coupes are a reminder of the grey imports craze in the early 2000’s. Namely, the Z30 model, the bulbous 90’s luxo coupe.

Often badged as a Lexus, the Z30 Soarers had beige everywhere, Cheap leather, TV’s in the dash, power everything and always a faint hint of cigarette smoke. They flooded in from Japan, and allowed school teachers, retired mums and mid-life-crisis-having salesmen everywhere a taste of the JDM life.

Well, if you rewind back to 1981, the Toyota Soarer was the freshman luxury coupe on the scene. The GZ10 Soarer was the new jewel in Toyota’s crown. Basically a luxury Supra, it helped solidify the brand’s reputation and acted as a warning shot towards the Germans.

The GZ10’s a bit thin on the ground in Australia, as opposed to the later models. Which makes this example, currently for sale on Gumtree, all the more special. Even more so considering the Shakotan treatment this one has seen.

Sure, it’s only a non turbo, auto, 1ge six. But look at that paint, those SSR MK2 wheels, that chin spoiler. That transmission cooler. It will piss people off. Have them scratching their heads, as they break their necks to watch it drive by. Love it or hate it, this GZ10 Soarer is a great representation of the Shakotan style of car.

If you want this 1984 Toyota GZ10 Soarer, find it on Gumtree here for $23k.
