1985 Porsche 930 Turbo SE Flachbau (Slant Nose): Sonderwunschprogramm

From a time when Special Edition meant something.

I stumbled upon this stunning 1985 Porsche 930 Turbo SE Flachbau (Slant Nose) for sale on Facebook (of all places), and just had to feature it. You rarely see them pop up for sale, so it was a treat to see it amongst the used trampolines and Commodore engines on Marketplace.

Background

What is it about Porsche 911’s? Widely considered the sports car you can use everyday, their numbers are now vast. Not just the run of the mill 911’s either.

Infact, listening to an old Smoking Tyre podcast featuring Doug Demuro, I discovered that supposedly in 2018, 40 percent of all 911’s sold were GT cars. These ofcourse being the GT3, GT3 RS, GT3 RS 4.0- the list goes on. Basically all the ones you stop and stare at. Yeah, turns out those poster car Porsches are not so special any more.

But, there was once a time when the release of a special edition Porsche meant just that. It was special. Whether it be the company actually limiting numbers, or people still not realising the investment potential, early special edition Porsches usually never sold in huge numbers.

Take this stunning 1985 Porsche 930 Turbo SE Flachbau (Slant Nose). Just 948 of these cars were ever built globally, and few remain today. The Slant Nose was a factory option (or sonderwunschprogramm) designed to improve aerodynamics and performance. Pop up headlights replaced the Frogs eyes we are so used too, and offer a slipprier front end. Whilst they sold quickly, true Porsche fans either loved them or hated them. I mean, where’s my fucking round headlights freund?

Because of this, it took a little while for the Slant Nose to earn it’s stripes in the market. However, they are well and truly sought after now- the near $1m price tag on this example (offered by Lorbek Cars) proof.

Why is it cool?

And WHAT an example it is, too. Australian delivered, and with super low kilometres, it would have to be one of the best Slant Nose 930’s on offer globally. The iconic Guards Red paint paired and black Fuchs are the combo that everyone wants. The interior looks almost untouched, and you could eat off the engine bay. I mean, the thing hasn’t probably even had its first major service. Which begs the question- will the new owner actually drive it?

It would be such a shame for this car to disappear into a collection. But, unfortunately, I feel it’s inevitable.

So take a good look folks. This thing is no doubt destined for a hidden away garage in one Australia’s more affluent suburbs, only to be kept in captivity like some sort of sick joke.
