2001 Mazda FD RX7 RS: Born Slippy

I spotted this amazing 2001 Mazda FD RX7 RS on Facebook the other day, and just couldn’t resist.

I have always maintained that the nineties was by far the best decade for Japanese cars. You had the birth of the Evo and WRX, everything got the turbo/awd treatment, and you had each major Japanese manufacturer pumping out Twin Turbo world beaters- The Mitsubishi 3000GT, Nissan GT-R (or 300zx), Toyota Supra, and this, the Mazda FD RX7.

Yes, yes, I know- it says “2001”. But if you have even half an interest in the last generation RX7, you’ll know that it was born in 1992. Infact, this example is one of the last bastions of the 90’s coupe, which was treated to the RS treatment in an effort to no doubt move some numbers before calling it quits in 2002.

I was in two minds to post this car, as it is heavily modified. And heavily modified Mazdas can often go two ways. They’re either great. Or they blow up and destroy your life/bank account/marriage/dignity. Infact, this one isn’t even Twin Turbo anymore, having been converted to single turbo somewhere along the line. This will no doubt cause you to clench those buttocks extra tight when departing from the traffic lights in the wet (lag, lag, lag, BOOST). Just perfect if you ask me.

But I couldn’t help myself, so here it is. The whole temptation of a 460hp 13b just had me a bit giddy.

And on that note, I will leave you to bask in the undeniable beauty that is the FD RX7. Not a straight line or piston to be seen.
