2001 Mazda FD RX7 Type R Bathurst R: Dorito Dueler

An exercise in restraint, kind of.

Today on Car Rave, we are looking at a rather stunning 2001 Mazda RX7 Type R Bathurst R.

The oddly named Type R Bathurst R, was built to commemorate the RX7’s success around Mount Panorama during the late nineties. Shockingly, this special edition was never officially sold on our shores, being a JDM vehicle only. Only 500 were built, making this example a rather rare rotary in Australia.

Given its limited numbers, Mazda purists may question the need to modify this example. However, considering other modified RX7’s, huge restraint and consideration has been given to this car. The result is one of the best looking RX7’s currently for sale in Australia. It’s a hard thing to improve the already desirable looks on third gen 7’s, but somehow this car does just that.

Achieving such a neat package ain’t cheap, either. After a quick glimpse of the spec sheet, it becomes apparent that the owner has spared no expense. Genuine Re-Amemiya front lip and rear diffuser, Odula Dry Carbon rear wing insert and featherweight Rays ZE40 rims are some of the highlights, and are all hugely expensive parts.

Mechanically, it seems this RX7 is more about driveability than sheer power. Although, I have no doubt she’s still a fairly rapid rig. The twin turbos remain intact, controlled with an Apexi FC ECU. The engine itself has had a rebuild with just a rather sensible extended port. Throw in a short shifted five speed, and a 3.5″ turbo back exhaust, and your bound to still get yourself into trouble.

If you’re in the market for a stunningly modified, rare modern classic, then this 2001 Mazda RX7 Type R Bathurst R could be perfect. Find it on Facebook Marketplace for $55k here.
