Big Block Boogie, Part 3: 1971 Plymouth Barracuda

An expat strip and dyno weapon

The final (and most insane) car I am posting for the Big Block Boogie is this absolute monster of a 1971 Plymouth Barracuda.

It honestly doesn’t get much more insane than this Cuda. Here’s the facts:

  • 7.3 second quarter with a shot of nitrous / 8 second quarter N/A
  • 1435hp at the tyres with a shot nitrous / 1000hp at the tyres N/A
  • 654 cubes of Keith Black Hemi
  • Airshifted Turbo 400
  • Multiple features/articles/press
  • Documented within an inch of its life
  • On board fire system (how many cars do you know that have that)
  • Purple

If all this means nothing to you, then just trust me when I say to you that this thing is seriously quick. Currently, the fastest production car- the baby cousin of this Cuda- the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon– has 840 hp (626 kW, and on 100 octane race fuel) and will run down the quarter in 9.65. Over 2 seconds slower than old mate here- which in the quarter-mile world is a lifetime.

Likewise- the Bugatti Chiron, with its 8.0-liter, 16-cylinder, quad-turbocharged powerplant- can muster up a healthy 1500hp. But that’s just 65hp more than our purple friend. Plus it can only do the quarter in 9.9 seconds. And, as if thats not a big enough kick in the guts, the Chiron will set you back US$3,800,000 (it’s proposed that figure is more like US$5,000,000 for Australian buyers)! Wouldn’t have thought so, mate.

And if you are thinking that this car is just some shell of its former self – you would be wrong. The owner states that the car has not been hacked up, retaining features such as original glass and wind up/down windows. It was fully street legal before it was imported from the States, and even kept its working turn signals.

Sure it will turn you into a fireball at even the first mention of a ‘corner’. And questions are sure to be raised as to whether it’s register-able in Australia (we’re not as lax as the states). And yes, it’ll suck down the gas like your alcoholic uncle at Christmas.

But none of that matters.

Why?

Because, this:

Nothing will ever beat that sound.

As mentioned earlier, the Cuda has had a pretty well documented life- originally being built Stateside by a bloke called Darren Tedder. Darren obviously had more than half a clue- as he decided to basically build one of the world’s biggest Hemi’s and stuff it in the Cuda’s engine bay. That helped him to score features in Hot Rod magazine and a place at SEMA one year. The Cuda has picked up various Dyno and Drag awards in its life- and it’s great hulking Hemi has almost as much press as the car itself. Not since the Hakosuka from a few weeks back has a car been so internet famous. It’s a testimony to Darren, and it’s great that it now resides on our shores!

If you have big boy/girl pockets, you can check it out on Carsales here for $155k.

And as if you needed anymore convincing, here is this exact 1971 Plymouth Barracuda in all its glory.
