Wagon Week:  1964 Chrysler New Yorker Town & Country

A wagon that flexes its factory muscle

Here is a real treat. A huge and undeniably cool 1964 Chrysler New Yorker Town & Country. It’s like a Valiant on steroids.

Some of you may remember this car from the recent “Lost in the 50’s” museum auction recently. Well, she’s up for sale again, in what must have been a tough decision for the current owner. Especially after dropping a claimed $35k on mechanical overhaul (ex-museum cars aren’t always a good buy it seems).

Where to begin with this beast?

First off, the styling. The 1963-64 New Yorker sedans featured all new styling, but on a virtually unchanged chassis from the previous iteration. It didn’t quite work, however. They suffered from an oddly sloped boot and rear wheel seemed to be positioned way to far toward the rear. The wagons, however, still utilised the same glasshouse as its predecessors. The dramatic sweeping C-pillar and pillarless side profile made from some extremely cool looking wagons. The interior still retains some of the early 60’s charm too (square steering wheel), despite being dulled down slightly.

But the best part of these cars was the powertrain. Whilst competitors such as Mercury and Buick weren’t terribly concerned about making their wagons fast, Chrysler thought otherwise. Infact, the Town and Country came with only one motor option- the big block 413ci Wedge. The wedge motors were one most potent engine options from the mid sixties, picking up where the Firepower Hemi’s left off in 1958. By the time they found themselves between the New Yorkers massive guards in ’64, they were pumping out 340 hp (254 kW). It’s fair to say then this wagon would be no slouch, especially with power figures dangerously close to some of the 60’s greatest.

Unbelievably then, this classic muscle car come family wagon is just $49k. A bargain when you consider what other U.S or Aussie muscle $49k could get you. Probably a clapped out GT replica or boring-ass catalogue built Mustang.

So if you like your muscle cars a little different, then I reckon this is probably for you. Find this amazing 1964 Chrysler New Yorker Town & Country on Carsales here.

1964 Chrysler New Yorker Town & Country: In the owners own words

Stand out from the crowd of boring Mustang owners with this 1964 Chrysler New Yorker Town & Country, pillar-less hardtop wagon! Rare even in its native U.S, this is surely the only example to be found Down Under.

Hre’s what you get:
-One POTENT 413 Wedge motor (fresh rebuilt by Motoreco in Wodonga, still being run in!)
-Push button auto
-White leather interior
-Pillar-less hardtop
-older restoration, presents very well
-Factory cruise control

Twice a museum car, originally at the Imperial Palace in Las Vegas, before crossing the pond and landing in Newcastle Australia (Lost in the ’50s museum).

Since then it has undergone a major mechanical overhaul to the tune of 35k. Receipts for all work can be provided.
